Seafarers’ Christmas Parcel Event: 14-15 November 2022
For the last 3 years, we have organised 450-500 Christmas parcels for seafarers around the world who are in Scotland at Christmas. (see Archived Events 2019 and 2020 for pictures of previous years).
This year, again with joint funding from the main three organisations (Apostleship of the Sea, Sailors’ Society and Mission to Seafarers Scotland) and further support from many churches in Leith, we packed up 550 gift bags for the seafarers with small items – woolly hats, knitted here in Britain, pens, toothbrushes, candles, soap, combs, notebooks.  As always, we had a stall in the mall at Ocean Terminal, and a special Christmas card designed by a Leith schoolchild, which we asked passers-by to sign with a friendly Christmas message.  The gifts and messages go all round the world and mean a great deal to seafarers who are far from home at Christmas.

Our 2022 card was designed by Sandy Watkins (aged 8) of Trinity Primary School in Leith.  Congratulations, Sandy.  You can see the card here.  LCT.seafarerrs card A6.2022 (1)  Thanks so much to all who helped, signed cards or collected items for the sailors!

Pause for Remembrance 2022 @ Ocean Terminal
On 11 November 2022, with millions of others in the UK, we remembered all who suffer in war, and in particular, the centenary of the First World War.  This year, the children of Lorne Primary School in Leith took part.  They performed a silent dance routine, ‘The Iron Harvest’, evoking the continued finding of WW1 items in the French countryside, and joined in the reading of Scottish poems by Marion Angus and E.A.Mackintosh.

October Community Craft Corner @ Ocean Terminal, 14-17 October.
This is the fourth time we have run this  during the school holiday week, and it was enjoyed by all!  Our theme this time was the sea, fishes and Scotland, with thistles, Celtic crosses and doves of peace included in our crafts.  Thank you to all who helped; for photos of the fun, click on the link.  October 2022 Craft Corner @ OT

Mission Shaped Intro in Leith, Wednesday 24 September- 29 October 2022.  MSI this time included participants from Murrayfield, Musselburgh and Cockenzie, as well as Leith and we enjoyed the variety!   If your church is interested in offering the course, the flyer below (for the course just ended) will give an idea of the content.

Leith Churches Holiday Club 2022: Fit for a King?   Crafts, drama, games, prayer, challenges, people getting wrapped up in paper…… it was all happening at the YMCA Edinburgh in Leith in July!  We had about 45 children (from 15 different schools this year) at our Holiday Club, getting ‘fit for a King’.   This year’s material was written in Scotland (Yeah!) and kept us closely linked with the fun and fury at the Commonwealth Games in Glasgow.

The Club took place this year at YMCA Edinburgh, from 28 July to 1 August.  For pictures of the fun, click on the link.  Holiday Club pics 2022 website. doc

Scotland’s Future: A Rainbow Nation?  Annual Meeting 2022

At our 2022 Annual Meeting on 10 June, we welcomed Sr Isabel Smyth SND, Chair of Interfaith Scotland, as our guest speaker.  In this referendum year, she spoke on ‘Scotland’s Future – A Rainbow Nation?’

Lent Groups 2022
In 2022, three Lent groups ran in Leith, two of which used the innovative material Finding a Voice by Hilary Bailey.  This course is based on the film The King’s Speech.  If you would like to know more about the courses, you can views the posters and information below.
